Lightbulb Dried Apple Wreath

IF YOU WANT A PICTURE OF AN EXAMPLE OF THESE, LET ME KNOW AND I CAN EMAIL IT TO YOU... CAN'T PUT PICTURES AND DIAGRAMS ON THESE.

You use dried apples to make this wreath. You can make it any shape you want using a wire frame (heart-shaped is very cute though!)

SUPPLIES:

Juice from 9 lemons
2 tsp salt
8 to 10 large firm apples (Ida Reds and Rome Reds work best, but you can use any firm apple)
Ground spices:
6 tsp cinnamon
2 tsp allspice
2 tsp orrisroot powder
1 tsp of cloves
(the spices make it smell great and also work as a natural preservative!)
8-10 inch wire frame (either make it yourself or buy pre-made... they make some that can be open or closed by unhooking 2 ends. If you make your own you will need 8-10" of heavy gauge wire)
1 1/4 yd of 1" wide ribbon of your choice
Floral wire

TOOLS:

Sharp knife
Paper towels
Mortar and pestle or small bowl and spoon
Small kitchen sieve or tea strainer
Pastry brush
Broiler pan or wire screen
Pliers
Scissors

DIRECTIONS:

Pour freshly squeezed lemon juice in a medium-sized bowl, add salt and blend well.
Peel and slice apples horizontally into 1/8" to 1/4" thick circles. Core the apple slices if needed. Soak slices in the lemon juice mixture for six minutes, making sure that you turn them one time. They need to be covered completely.
Remove the slices from the bowl and lay them to dry on the paper towels; patting off any excess liquid.
Combine and blend the spices, the mortar and pestle works best. With sieve or tea strainer, dust slices with spice mixture. (Make sure to get both sides.
Place slices in single layer on broiler pan or wire screen. Place in oven at 150-200 degrees for 6 hours or until evenly dried. If you want to use a microwave use a microwave safe surface to place the slices on and microwave for 4-6 minutes at a low to medium heat. Let slices cool. If not dried thoroughly replace into oven or microwave. These slices should remain pliable.
Use pliers to straighten both ends of frame. fold apples into halves and then quarters and thread them onto the wire frame. When you have completely covered the frame with apples, use the pliers to bend ends back into hooks so that they can be reconnected.
Use the ribbon to make a bow with a loop for hanging your wreath. Use the floral wire to attatch the bow to your wreath.

These smell delicious and they look great too! You kids will have a lot of fun making these and they are great for gifts!
