The Dragon King

“The Dragon King” is Vivian Slade’s first children’s book. Her story was inspired by an encounter with a young burn patient. (We love that she helped this child’s vision and imagination come to fruition) She uses the story of King Ethan and the dragon in her mission to encourage children to keep their chins up in a world that isn’t always friendly. This is an important message that children can take to heart and carry with them.

Slade’s book is illustrated by colorful drawings her own daughter created. They are very well done and make a cheerful addition to a story already full of hope and inspiration.

There is also audio available which makes for a unique bonus feature that children will enjoy as they hear the characters come to life.

The book is longer than you would expect for younger children, but can work well if you read it to them over 2 – 4 reading sessions (or bedtime story time), depending on their age, to get through the entire book.

More About the Publishing Company & Book: The Dragon King was inspired by 6 year old Ethan on the burn unit at Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville, TN in 2006. It is a fully illustrated children’s book which tells the tale of young king, Ethan, who is unexpectedly forced to defend his kingdom. With more and more American’s taking charge of their health, there has been a great deal of focus on the ingredients we place in our bodies. While that is important, health advocate Joan Lunden decided to take cooking healthy in a new direction. She decided to focus on what we are cooking in, not just what we are cooking. This led her to develop her line of Twiztt cookware – cookware that is both “safe and responsible.”

Highlights of Twiztt:

What I loved:
A “safe” non-stick pan. I am still haunted by imagines of my old Teflon pans chipping and particles going into our food. Yuck.

The performance. The fry pan I was sent cooked eggs, bacon, and sausage with no problems, and no added oils. My husband was most impressed by how it cooked our eggs. Not only were we able to achieve the elusive “over medium” hardness, but the whites had very little browning on them, making for great presentation.

What I would change:
I’d make the warning not to use cooking spray more prevalent. Yes, I’m  an idiot, and it’s my own fault I didn’t read the instructions thoroughly, but let’s face it, most people don’t. Especially when it’s something like cookware where you think you know how to use it. If you make the same mistake I did, it’s not the end of your glorious cookware experience. But it will make for a pain to get clean, unlike cleaning it every time I used it without cooking spray. Lesson learned.

Skeeter Snacks – Nut Free

I was recently sent a box of cookies to sample from Skeeter Snacks. Skeeter Snacks are Nut-Free snacks designed by two fathers who have children with nut allergies, who were tired of the high prices and bad taste of other nut-free cookies. Their goal was to design a product any  child would eat, that was affordable to everyone.

What I loved:

The mission of this company. It’s stellar. Having raised a child with special dietary needs, I couldn’t agree more that specialty foods need to be more palatable AND affordable. Skeeter Snacks scored major points with me immediately just because they spoke to an issue near and dear to my heart.

The Chocolate Chunk Cookies. Om Nom Nom! The texture of these are similar to that of Famous Amos cookies, and the flavor is so very yummy! Like many women, I get chocolate cravings from time to time and these cookies were just perfect to satisfy them.

Skeeter Cinnamon Grahams. On top of being nut-free, they are also whole grain, have no trans fat, no high fructose corn syrup, and are all natural. Score! Even after removing all of those naughty ingredients, the grahams still tasted great. They also had this incredible crunch that seemed to speak to their healthiness.

What I would change:

I would removed High Fructose Corn Syrup from the SkeeterDoodle cookies. It wasn’t in the other products I sampled, which all tasted great! Since there is currently a lot of controversy over High Fructose Corn Syrup, I’d love to see it removed from those cookies as well.

Overall impression:

Give Skeeter Snacks a shot, whether your child has peanut allergies or not. They areaffordable, taste great, convenient, and do seem to be a healthier alternative to other commercial cookies.

“Having tree-nut and peanut allergies (TPAs) is hard. So is being a parent of a kid with these allergies.

Both of us have a child with TPAs. We founded Skeeter Snacks because we couldn’t find what we were looking for on store shelves.
